Ropes Course Recertification

Every year, I get to go to RSU Hillcat Challenge Course to get recertified as a Ropes Course Instructor. Our certification is through OSU Outdoor Adventure, the premier group of Challenge Course facilitators and instructors in the state. A group of 15-20 get together under the direction of Kirk Wimberly, Oklahoma State University’s associate director of campus recreation, and learn/relearn ropes course safety, knots, equipment, and hardware. We do this all with a very hands-on approach to learning, and we practice our skills by tying the knots, climbing the poles, belaying other participants, and jumping off of the pamper pole, etc.

The challenge course is such a great place for students to gain confidence, experience group communication and interaction, develop trust, and have some fun while performing physical activities. We take our Talent Search students twice a year, and each time, our students leave the course with a better understanding of themselves, their classmates, and our program.

I had so much fun, and left the course with a desire to be up in the air more, and I will have that chance next Thursday with our ETS Seniors!
